The young boy in the picture to the right is Sor. He was bashed by his father who then deserted him after his mother died. The brutal treatment continued at the hands of his older sister with whom Sor went to live. Unable to take it any more, he ran away to live with a neighbour...who, in turn, used Sor as a source of slave labour. He was forced to climb the sugar palm trees to retrieve the fruit, used in the making of raw sugar. When Sor came to Kampuchea House, he could not look anyone in the eye and rarely smiled or laughed. He also resorted to violence to solve his daily problems. The photograph shows how his life has changed since joining Kampuchea House. He has a very deep laugh and is smiling more and more. He no longer needs to use violence as he has many caring people around him to look after his needs.
