The mission of Kampuchea House (Australia) Incorporated is to provide orphaned children of Sotnikum District, Cambodia with housing, security, education and a family environment in a traditional setting. It is estimated that there are around 2800 orphans in the Sotnikum District and Kampuchea House is the only local orphanage. Of the 2800 children, around 75% are single orphans (one parent deceased and the other having deserted the child) while 25% are double orphans (both parents deceased). Due to the large number of single orphans in the district, and in Cambodia, Kampuchea House also provides for these deserted children. Kampuchea House is in a rural area so none of the children are street children. Previously, these children lived with ageing grandparents or in large extended families and their future was uncertain. They had little or no chance at an education or vocational training and the host family struggled to feed and clothe them. Now, all this has changed and they live a happy and healthy life at Kampuchea House AND still retain the ties with their extended families who live in the immediate area. |
